Selected candidates announced
6/06/2016
We have already selected the candidates for the 2016 Summer Course on Arabic Codicology in San Lorenzo de El Escorial!
For this third edition of the training course, we have received more than 60 applications to the 16 available places from USA, Canada, Brazil, Philippines, Malaysia, Morocco, Turkey, Tunis, Spain, France, Italy, UK, Germany, Denmark and other countries. Among the applicants, we have found also a great variety of professional branches and different levels of experience: from PhD candidates to Professors, researchers, librarians, book-sellers, historians, curators, archivists, philologists, etc. All the candidacies have been remarkably high-qualified and the selection of the 2016 students has been one of the hardest ever.
One more year, the organizers of the course are very glad to see the great and international interest in the course showed by all the applicants and we wish to express our gratitude to all those who have supported this project, especially to Al-Furqan Islamic Heritage Foundation and the Complutense Summer Courses organization.
We are also grateful to all the institutions that have helped us to spread the information about the course: the blog "La reina de los mares" (of the Islamic Library Felix María Pareja) or the Diwan Association, and we are indebted and thankful to all our colleagues and friends who have personally forwarded our emails.
Thank you all for your support and for helping us to make possible this III Course of Arabic Codicology in El Escorial!

ARABIC CODICOLOGY 2015 EDITION
12/04/2015
We are pleased to announce that a new edition of Arabic Codicology will take place this year. As last year, it will be directed by Dr. Nuria Martínez de Castilla (Complutense University, Madrid) who will be accompanied by Adam Gacek (McGill University) and François Déroche (Collége de France, Paris).
The course, supported by al-Furqan Islamic Heritage Foundation, will be held in the framework of the Complutense Summer Courses in San Lorenzo de El Escorial (Madrid) from 20th to 24th July.
This year we will learn about the Islamic handwritten tradition and its reception in El Escorial collection. As part of it, we will have the privilege of attending the step-by-step hands-on sessions in the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial which houses the most important collection of manuscripts in Arabic script in Spain and is one of the most relevant in Europe.
For more information, please check the website or contact us on [email protected].

WELCOME SPEECH BY DIRECTOR NURIA MARTÍNEZ DE CASTILLA
16/07/2014
Good morning and welcome to this first edition of this Arabic Codicology Course in El Escorial.
I'm really very happy for the success of this course. We have received a lot of applications for this course: about 40 people contact us in order to participate. However, as was said in the initial announcement, we could only select 16 of them due to the material-based nature of the programme. We hope that it will be possible to repeat it next year to meet this demand.
For this reason, I would like to express my good wishes to those who have been selected, 16 students from various countries: Belgium, Brazil, Egypt, Morocco, Netherlands, Spain, United Kingdom, Syria, Turkey, United States, and Germany (congratulations for the amazing victory of yesterday in the world cup), and more specially, to the five fellows of the Complutense Summer Courses.
First of all, I would like to thank the Complutense University Summer Courses for their support, specially to the Complutense University vice-rector of research, Francisco Tirado, who was convinced from the beginning that this course would be a success.
Actually, this would not have been possible without the collaboration and support of the Al-Furqan Islamic Heritage Foundation, from London. I am very pleased to share this table with the director of the Foundation, Mr Sali Shahsivari. This course is the result of our first meeting on this topic, but during the whole preparation process communication was quick and easy. From both sides, we succeeded in overcoming any problem or difficulty which arose during this process and I am convinced that we have been able to put up the best programme we could offer.
It relies on the participation of the probably two best experts in the field of Arabic Codicology, François Déroche and Adam Gacek, who will be teaching together for the first time a training course and will lead us through the MSS of an outstanding library: the Arabic MSS collection of the Real Monasterio de El Escorial library. To the two professors of the course will be joined by the library’s director, Mr José Luis del Valle Merino to whom I would like to extend my thanks for his enduring support over the last ten years (already!). Without him, the research we have been carrying out in the library could not have reached this result. I should actually add that over the last three years, I started to organize codicology courses in the frame of the Arabic and Islamic Studies Department of the Complutense University, with the participation of François Déroche. The teachings were in Spanish and once a year, we have had the opportunity to visit on an evening José Luis and the Arabic Manuscripts of the Library. But this week, and for the first time, we will be able to be there every evening. As an ornament of the theoretical part of the course, we are lucky in having with us a Professor from the Complutense University, María Jesús Viguera, who, in addition to his main field of expertise, the history of al-Andalus, has devoted many years of her life to the study of Arabic MSS. I would like to thank you again for having accepted to take part in this course.
I imagine all of you follow our Facebook https://es-es.facebook.com/CursodeManuscritosenelislamUcm and our Web Site. Both sites are updated with the last information about the course. Needless to say, you are invited in participating in our FB site with commentaries, events, manuscript researches or whatever you consider interesting for improvement of the study of Arabic manuscripts.
[…]
I don’t want to finish this short introduction without giving thanks again to al-Furqan Foundation, to the speakers, and last but no least, to Carlos Leo, the secretary of course, for all his work for the organization of this course.
Thank you all of you and let’s enjoy the manuscripts!
